How to manage postponed matches?

There are a number of ways of going about this.

Throughout our system, it is the league's decision as to whether a match is designated as postponed - clubs/teams cannot do this.

The main reason for matches not being played is the weather, but there are sometimes other reasons, such as a team failing to turn up, or the match being abandoned after it started, in which case the league needs to know what happened in order to make decisions.

It's worth saying that if a league doesn't handle postponements/rearrangements by communicating with clubs/teams, things can get messy.

Handling league postponements

There are two approaches:

1 When you learn of the postponement, mark the fixture as 'not played' and use the notes to say something like "Snowed off. To be rearranged". When you know the date of the rearranged fixture, add this as a new fixture, with a note "Rearranged from Oct 13". This approach means that teams can easily see, on their team page, the original fixture AND the rearranged fixture. This is what we recommend, but it does involve more work.

2 When you learn of the postponement, mark the fixture as 'not played', and use the notes to say something like "Snowed off. To be rearranged". When you know of the rearranged date, change the date of the fixture to the new date, and update the notes. This approach works fine, but because you are not keeping the postponed fixture on view, with its original date, teams have less information.

For leagues that use our SMS results service, or allow clubs to enter results, handling postponements is more important, because clubs/teams have a limited window of time within which to enter their results. If a match was due to be played in October, but was postponed to December, the club/team will not be able to submit their score in December if the league has not updated the system.

Handling cup postponements

Our cup competitions are more structured than league competitions, so it usually not possible to create an extra fixture for the rearranged match. When you learn of the postponement, use the notes to show it wasn't played, and that it will be rearranged. When you know of the rearranged date, update the fixture date, and the notes as required.
